Big Up Wi Beach has released its first public service announcement (PSA) on the importance of maintaining healthy beaches. In the PSA, Shelly, a hawksbill sea turtle explains how to keep beaches healthy by protecting different parts of the coastal environment – sand dunes, mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass beds – and the plants and animals which depend on them.
Shelly speaks about the importance of coral reefs for a healthy beach environment
The PSA highlights why beaches are important – they provide protection during storms, a place for recreation, and food and shelter for animals. Shelly goes on to explain that sometimes people do things that destroy the beach environment – litter, remove sand dunes, rip out seaweed, and break off pieces of coral.

The PSA encourages viewers to protect beaches by:
- • Disposing their garbage properly – "Nuh Dutty Up Wi Beach"
- • Protecting sand dunes, coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds – “Don’t destroy di dunes” “Care fi di coral” “Don’t rip out the seaweed”
